Enoch
Enoch is the seventh from Adam, the son of Jared and the father of Mathusala. Genesis gives him a few verses and ends his story without a death: “Enoch was well-pleasing to God, and was not found, because God translated him.” The writers who came after filled in the silence. Hebrews reads it as faith, Sirach calls him “an example of repentance to all generations,” Wisdom 4:10–11 uses the same words of a righteous man, who pleased God and was translated, without naming him, and Jude quotes a prophecy of his by name. Two books that bear his name or tell his story, 1 Enoch and Jubilees, say far more than Genesis does.
In Scripture
Genesis
He lives 365 years, is well-pleasing to God, and is not found. Luke 3:37 gives his place in the genealogy.
New Testament
Hebrews 11:5 reads that Genesis verse as faith: translated so as not to see death. Jude 14–15 says Enoch prophesied, and quotes him. A close parallel is 1 Enoch 1:9.
Wisdom writings (Septuagint)
Sirach names Enoch. Wisdom 4:10–11 describes a righteous man who pleased God and was translated, and does not name him.
1 Enoch and Jubilees
Enoch the scribe is sent to the Watchers (1 Enoch 12:4). Jubilees says he was the first to learn writing, was with the angels six jubilees, testified against the Watchers, and was taken into Eden.
